GIFT IDEA #21-STATIONERY

Remember back in the days of when people had to correspond via letter? When you anticipated the arrival of the postman and not because of your Zappos order? Remember when lovers didn't text, email or tweet each other but rather waxed poetic words onto paper, sealed with a kiss? (well I'm not so sure about the sealed with a kiss part). The idea is, not so long ago sending letters in the mail was a meaningful thing. Gift Idea #22 is stationery. Stationery paper and cards comes in different forms of paperweight and price range and you don't have to live in an opulent zip code or come from a certain pedigree to use them. Some of the best places in Chicago and surrounding suburbs to get your stationery from are:

Helanders of Lake Forest. I will be honest I LOVE THIS PLACE! their shop used to sit smack dab in Lake Forest Market square but in July 2011, they moved just around the corner to Westminster street, across from FoodStuffs. The one thing you should not do is judge this store by it's website, the best experience is to walk into the store and talk to someone there.
The family business has been around since 1922. One of my favorite things to do is walk in and quietly browse; they are really great at letting the shopper shop without interrupting every 10 seconds(Over the top customer service). They are the last few brick and mortar retailers that I can purchase my William Arthur "Hello" cards from. Helanders not only sells stationery they work with you to craft an upcoming invitation for your luncheon, holiday party, wedding or holiday card. For my city dwellers, take the Union Pacific North train up, not only will you enjoy the scenery you'll love Lake Forest market square.

Greer in Oldtown is a new favorite I came across Greer through a friend who bought me a book of positive words. It's owned by Chandra Greer who's background in business and branding has helped her amass loyal clientele following. You can also find Greer Chicago at the monthly Dose market in River East Arts center or online. The store and website has a great selection to suit your taste. I plan on getting my holiday cards from here; Shopping local never felt better.

The best gift is one that comes from the heart and will not strain your pockets strings. Stationery's not only show that you are thoughtful, the recipient just might send you a note in the mail to thank you for such a wonderful gift. If you want to take your giving further, have their stationery monogrammed.
